Jonah Blumenfeld’s Kishrei Halev project:

Over the past summer, I volunteered at a local food pantry, the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Long Branch. I handed out donations of food to needy families who live in our area.  I volunteered once a week for two months. Every night I was there, sixty or seventy cars lined up to get some food.  This food pantry feeds over 300 families each week.

It is hard to believe that in America there are so many hungry families. The Pandemic made it harder for people to get healthy food. By December, 2020, the number of food insecure people in New Jersey had increased by fifty percent! At this time, there were 1.2 million “food insecure” New Jerseyans; that’s 1 out of 8 people living in New Jersey.  Of these, 365,000 were children.

It’s a mitzvah to help the poor. “He who is kind to the poor, lends to the Lord.” (Proverbs 19:17). I tried to make every family’s day better while I was there. I really enjoyed working at the food pantry and plan to continue to volunteer there after my bar mitzvah.
