A Shabbat to Share

This week Beth Miriam will be having a very special Shabbat that comes at a most important time.

After the President called countries that foul-laden term which clearly implied that people of color are not welcome in the United States (this was obvious to anyone hearing it despite the  later protestations), we as a temple are sharing a Shabbat of peace and support in each other’s presence to say with a strong and clear voice ‘you are my brother and you are my sister.’

Our new friends from Trinity AME church, under the inspired leadership of Dr. Rev. Lesly Deveraux will be sharing a Shabbat to wrap up the week of commemoration of the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.  This is not a political service.  It is a Shabbat where both communities will reaffirm that we are all created in the image of God.  All of us.  We as Jews have no other moral choice and it is a choice we embrace with full strength and love.

You are most welcome to join us and bring your children and your friends to this service.  Our presence is a powerful statement that we in Long Branch will reach out and raise our voices in song to God who created each of us and who, in that creation, taught us that color is only an illusion.  It is the inner humanity of each other we will embrace and we will walk together as a church and a temple beginning this Shabbat.

The service will take place on January 19th at 6 PM.  PLEASE NOTE THE MUCH EARLIER TIME THAN USUAL
